Bosch Front-Load Washer — Door Glass Stress Fracture Risk

Front-load washing machines, including certain Bosch models, have glass door windows that can develop stress fractures under specific conditions. While rare, a shattered door glass during a high-speed spin cycle can release hot water and pose a burn and laceration injury risk.

Affected Models

This advisory applies to Bosch front-load washers in the 300, 500, and 800 Series. The risk is highest on units older than 5 years that have been subjected to impact damage (e.g., dropping a heavy item against the door glass).

Contributing Factors

  • Prior impact damage to the door glass (even minor chips not visible externally)
  • Extreme temperature changes — washing very hot loads immediately after cold
  • Manufacturing defects in the tempered glass (rare)
  • Age-related stress on the glass from thousands of spin cycles of vibration

Prevention

  • Inspect the door glass regularly for chips, cracks, or scratches
  • Do not slam the washer door — close it firmly but gently
  • Do not place heavy objects on or against the door
  • If you notice any crack or chip in the glass, stop using the washer immediately

What to Do If Glass Breaks

If the door glass breaks during a cycle, do not attempt to open the door. Turn off the washer at the breaker. Wait for any remaining water to cool. Call for professional service. Do not attempt to clean up glass fragments inside the drum — a technician should handle this safely.

Urgency Level

Low for undamaged glass. High if any chip, crack, or scratch is visible — stop using the washer immediately.
