All Bosch gas cooktops are equipped with thermocouple-based flame failure devices (FFDs) that shut off the gas supply when a burner flame goes out. While this safety feature is reliable, there is a brief delay between flame extinction and gas shutoff. This advisory explains the delay and proper safety practices.
Affected Models
All Bosch gas cooktops and gas ranges with thermocouple flame sensing — this is a standard feature on every Bosch gas cooking appliance sold in the United States.
How the Flame Failure Device Works
When a burner flame goes out (from a boil-over, draft, or accidental extinguishing), the thermocouple cools down and signals the gas valve to close. This process takes approximately 15-30 seconds. During this window, a small amount of unburned gas is released into the kitchen.
Safety Recommendations
- Always use the range hood when cooking with gas — even for quick tasks
- If a burner flame goes out, turn the knob to OFF immediately — do not wait for the FFD
- If you smell gas after a boil-over, turn off the burner, ventilate the kitchen, and wait 5 minutes before relighting
- Never leave gas burners unattended, especially when boiling liquids
- Ensure proper ventilation in the kitchen — gas combustion produces CO and NO2
When to Call for Service
If a burner continues to release gas after the flame has been out for more than 60 seconds, the flame failure device may have failed. Turn off the gas supply to the cooktop and schedule a professional inspection. A non-functioning FFD is a serious safety concern.
Urgency Level
Informational for normal operation. High urgency if the flame failure device does not shut off gas within 60 seconds of flame loss.
